Directional Design was formerly Abet Fashion’s, Inc., Pueblo, Colorado; a laboratory to research the fashion and medical needs of wheelchair clothing problems. It was owned by Anna Rafferty.  Here is what John Hase of Colorado had to say about the Vestimological adjustments our laboratory did for him.

  “Letter of Recommendation:
I have been paralyzed for five years and have

always had a hard time finding clothes that fit
well and looked nice. Now that I am graduating

from the University of Southern Colorado, I am
in need of suits for interviewing and employment.
I heard about ABET fashions (now Directional
Design) through a case study that I participated

in while taking a small business studies class.

I purchased a suit for three hundred dollars and took it to ABET (now Directional Design) for tailoring. They acted with efficiency and professionalism in their dealings with me. I was one-hundred percent satisfied with the results and am now in the process of having one more suit, three sports jackets, and two pair of slacks tailored.

I would recommend ABET (now Directional Design) to anyone and I plan to continue my patronage.”

But don’t just take John’s word for it—try "THE MISSING LINK©" ebooks that show you the correct answers and solutions to most of the problems you have with your clothing. It is available for purchase right here (Click to order).

Dear Reader,

What do you think has caused your clothing problems? What has caused such stress, cost untold dollars and still there is no solution? Let me show you…

The most gratified people in the world used to be those who could go into a store and purchase good style, good fit and good feeling clothing no matter the cost of the item. Clothing was made with some good qualities, even if it came from a discount store.

But since the early seventies, things have drastically changed!

Today even those who purchase high cost clothing find duress in fit and comfort… NOTHING! seems to be able to correct the fact that clothing has lost correct body functionability and a lot of good style. Even for the stand-up people.

You do not need to continue the duress due to clothing problems. You can have clothing problems properly corrected. NOT by buying a larger size that actually creates additional clothing problems; NOT to mention giving you a sloppy look.

You can NOW understand how to buy what will best work on your body in a sitting, squatting, climbing situation.

Sure, worldwide this is not going to change overnight. But with the help of laboratory tested information, even the “little guy” can have more comfort, less pressure, more mobility, and good coverage with less money, time and effort.

How? Through proper Vestimological Adjustments!

The fact is -- home sewers, seamstresses, tailors, custom design houses or design schools can help you have comfortable, stylish, good fitting clothing right from your own closet. Or, with any garment you purchase. And a custom house can do pattern adjustments before cutting the fabric for your garment. All you need is honest laboratory tested information put to use.

Why Most of What You Learn About Your Sitting Clothing Problem is NOT FACT…

Most people think it is because it is no longer made in the USA unless it is labeled “Made in USA”. Thus they pay higher for a USA product only to find it fits just as poorly.

But that is not the reason. The real reason is that back in the early seventies, the design schools got sloppy or lazy with the principles of fashion design. They did not check the student’s individual drafts. One New York professor complained to me that it was impossible to correct thirty-one drafts. Thus, every student who went into the workforce drafting patterns for design houses, took these mistakes along with them. These multitudes of mistakes have generated the clothing you wear today.

I’m not kidding! Do you know that a ¼ inch mistake changes the size of that part of the garment one full size? And that on other seams, 1/8 inch changes the true size, a full size. See how easy this has become a world wide problem when the schools teach international students!!

Well, that’s not all. The less expensive clothing is cheaper because the cutting houses stack more than ten layers on the cutting table at one time.  I’m sure you have all had a garment where one sleeve or pant leg seemed smaller or shorter than the other.  That is because the fabric slipped under the saw that cut those highly stacked piles of garment pieces, making the lower half of the stack a different size than the top half.

Another problem you contend with daily is that no one is paying attention to the textile that makes the fabric. The textile industry need to check to see if the clothing made of a particular textile is correct for body use.  Many textiles do not allow proper body breathing or mobility, yet are used in manufacture of clothing for sale.

All of the clothing principles that allow proper mobility have been abandoned. Clothing today is made to fit a cardboard figure, not a three-dimensional body, let alone one that sits, squats, runs, throws, or climbs.

There are virtually no standard principles applied to design of clothing today. All people are finding clothing problems, and the design schools need to raise the graduating standards required for a design degree.

...Your understanding of how to correct your own clothing problems
gives you the advantage!

In some instances it is less expensive to have a garment made for you. It will not cost to have it taken apart to do the adjustments. The pattern can be adjusted before cutting the fabric, saving much fitting and testing time. A custom made garment will include stronger seams than a purchased garment of like style. In other instances, you will find the Vestimological adjustments the best way to correct the sitting clothing problems.

Knowing which clothing style will not work for your particular situation, will eliminate struggling with that style’s problems.

Knowing what style will not perform for you and why, will help eliminate the stress of a wrong decision.

Knowing how some fabric reacts in certain situations can help you make quality choices.

As an example, you will be able to determine which garments in your closet cannot be corrected for your problems or would be cost prohibitive.  No more guessing!

Emotional considerations...

The clothing one owns is secretly binding their personality for the day.  From age two through death clothing has very strong mind connotations that everyone expresses within.  Lack of clothing that fits correctly creates an atmosphere of disbelief within the rest of the mental make up.  Not having clothes that fits correctly affects a person's potential and self-worth.

There Is One Problem Though…

It is called lack of correct information (sometimes called “get a larger size”), and here’s how that works:

  1. Your clothing causes a sore or won’t give you the mobility you need.
  2. You try to have it altered to correct the problem (dollars out of pocket).
  3. The problem continues and creates a sore. Sometimes another sore develops from clothing having been altered by stand-up clothing standards. Or the mobility problem just changed to another problem…
  4. …so you end up passing it on or throwing it out (replacement = more dollars out of pocket).
  5. You get a larger size, or the doctor treating the sore tells you to get a larger size.
  6. Your money keeps going out, but the problem doesn’t go away.
  7. The problem is you don’t ever get the correct fit for the sitting clothing problem because there is no correct information to work with.

This sad scenario happens all too often. The tailors, designers, seamstresses and home-sewers all try their best.  But, with the current standards taught today, they are unable to correct the problem of the sitting or action figures. They are relying on fabric weave to do it for them. Wheelchair and much occupational clothing cannot use fabric weave to address clothing problems. Presently, you have no choice, you can only continue to buy stand-up style clothing and make do.

Not anymore!

However, if you’re curious, let me share my story…

How I Went From an Average Designer to Develop the New Paradigm of Vestimology©

I had been a custom clothing designer for about thirty years.  For five years, in the early 1980’s, I operated my own Custom Bridal Salon.

One day I received a phone call from a gentleman who wanted to know if I would make him a suit. Well, I’d made a couple of men’s suits for people who could not find one to fit in the stores. So, maybe…

I asked why he selected my Bridal Salon to have a suit made instead of going to a tailor. He said he wanted the suit to get married in.

I asked why he didn’t rent a tux. He said they couldn’t alter one to look good on him because he was in a wheelchair.

I saw that as a challenge. I accepted the order. I had no idea there was no information for me to use, to help me in this design. I had no idea the real challenge this would become.

As the design progressed, so did the challenges. I saw a real world need. I closed my Design Studio, moved my business into a town with a college and opened a laboratory to research for the Sit-Down-Figure (SDF) Analogy©.

My laboratory assistants and I set out to find a proper way to give people in wheelchairs comfort, mobility, lack of abrasion and prevention of pressure caused decubitus ulcers.

We bought different styles of jeans from the Good Will Industries, tore them apart, and worked with what we had learned in producing the original suit design.

I contacted the college to get students in wheelchairs to participate in the study. Our first client/student was a person with paraplegia that had serious hip bone abrasions from his jeans. The skin was dead and sloughed off more than ¼ inch into his body and each hip bone area was inflamed about four inches all around the holes.

We took a pair of his jeans, did the Vestimological© adjustments on them and ONE WEEK later his mother called and said his sores were no longer inflamed and they could see the sores looked much better.

WE WERE ON THE RIGHT TRACK!!!

Our next student, a person with quadriplegia, a senior in Business Administration, wanted a suit for a job interview. We did the adjustments to this suit and our young man was so pleased he gave us the testimonial letter at the top of this page.

The next week we got a call and he very excitedly said he had so much mobility in his suit he was able to open the dormitory door by himself for the first time! He then brought more clothes for adjustment. And more than his testimonial stated!

He could afford to buy them, but wanted to know if insurance would pay to have them adjusted.

That question made me go to a doctor and ask about the requirements for needs with insurance. With his help, I was able to establish, by calling several different insurance companies, that some insurance specifications needed to be met for coverage. (That was in the mid 1980’s, but private insurance today, with its focus on preventative medicine, should open that avenue again.)

This same doctor was so excited about what we were doing that he sent one of his patients from another town to my lab. The patient brought a letter of request stating that the man was in a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy and that his pants needed to be adjusted to enable him to urinate normally without help.

The man was so pleased with what the lab did for him that he brought most everything in his closet, along with several new items, for us to adjust. And the stream of clients just kept coming, some driving three hundred miles.

Here is a testimonial from Gary Oakes in Colorado, a young man in his twenties with spina bifida. The lower part of his body never reached above the ten year old size when his handicap overtook the body. From his waist up he grew to his normal manhood size of a size 40” chest.

”Let me take this opportunity to thank you for all your fine work fitting me for the clothes that I so desperately needed. I had tried to find clothes that would fit me when sitting in my wheelchair, but they were not to be found. I even had some clothes altered to try and fit me.  They all had the same problems. They didn’t fit, they always looked like they were four sizes too big. They always bunched up, the pants always fell down when I tried to transfer in or out of my wheelchair and the coats were not made to wear when working in a manual wheelchair. The clothes that you made me have solved all these problems. They also give me a sense of well being just knowing that I now look like I should, not some guy in a wheelchair with baggy pants and a coat that didn’t fit.

I wish you a great deal of success in your business.  I am sure there are a lot of people with some physical handicap that will benefit from your work. Again THANK YOU VERY MUCH.”

These different types of physical disabilities enabled my lab to develop exacting standards, meeting the requirements of the doctors for prevention and maintenance of some very severe decubiti. It allowed me to find the solutions that made proper fit of the Sit-Down-Figure (SDF)© clothing and gave good performance for SDF people.

Medical professionals were telling us their patients’ were having less problems with depression. They started telling us we were the “Missing Link in rehabilitative medicine”.

I had to develop a means for the Family Service sector of the medical field to understand how to communicate with the adjusters (tailors, seamstress, etc.), and also with doctors. I developed a dual set of written instructions for the medical profession and the fashion industry.

First, I had to develop written instructions for prescription writing, in medical terminology, to allow the patient to apply for insurance coverage. A medical prescription identifies which parts of the body are affected by clothing problems. Then, I had to develop a corresponding prescription for clothing adjusters to relate to the medical prescription, for insurance companies.

Using medical terminology would meet the insurance requirements of “need”. And medical professionals have to know how to word the prescription allowing the adjuster to understand where the problem of concern is. We treated the whole thing like a brace prescription: one column for the adjuster, one for the medical. I then developed instructions, in medical and layman language, for learning how to write prescriptions in both fields.

As I pulled together the research results for the medical profession, to be able to write a prescription for clothing adjustment, it became apparent that I had developed the NEW PARADIGM of VESTIMOLOGY©. There is no information for the medical profession to understand Vestimological© adjustments. And there is no information for the textile industry to understand the medical need of the active or passive sitting person.

This has all been done. The prescriptions have been tested by doctors, their patients, private insurance, and the family service section of the medical field. This includes care givers who take people to and from an adjuster, helping undress and dress them for the first garment fitting. The prescriptions are workable for both the adjuster and the medical profession.

These laboratory results are now written for all people to use, including the education fields. I hope for all of us, this drops right into the design schools and some inspired graduate goes to work developing a line of clothing for the Sit-Down-Figure (SDF)©.
